Observation Narrative
Dry-mesic Quercus montana - dominated forest on sheltered, north-facing ravine slope. Large overstory trees up to ca. 90 cm dbh are scattered on the slope. Rhododendron maximum, a rare disjunct from the mountains here, dominates the shrub layer along with Kalmia latifolia. Although Quercus montana dominates the overstory, Liriodendron tulipifera and some Fagus grandifolia are recruiting into gaps and open places in the understory.
